Health Sciences University

Established in 1965, Health Sciences University (HSU) stands as a leading provider of health sciences higher education. With over 50 years of dedication to musculoskeletal health and wellbeing, HSU has consistently pioneered advancements in the field. Its specialised programmes span chiropractic, radiology, rehabilitation, physiotherapy, osteopathy, sports psychology, speech and language therapy, podiatry, dietetics, and occupational therapy.

At the heart of HSU’s mission is the transformation of lives through health sciences education, research, and clinical care. A unique feature of HSU is its integration of multi-disciplinary clinical services with education and research, creating a patient-centred environment that benefits students, staff, and patients alike. With clinics based in Bournemouth and London, HSU conducts over 50,000 clinic visits annually.

Clinic facilities include medical imaging (upright MRI, X-ray, and ultrasound), specialist clinical services (sports injury, newborn feeding, paediatrics, VO₂ Max testing), advanced equipment such as an antigravity treadmill, and an Assisted Daily Living Suite for occupational therapy. In 2020, the University received £2.7 million in funding from the Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership to construct a state-of-the-art Integrated Rehabilitation Centre, which has provided patients with top-tier care delivered by a dedicated multidisciplinary team since opening in October 2022.

In 2023, HSU launched the Centre for Workforce and Systems Innovation (CWSI), which addresses workforce challenges in healthcare through innovative strategies, evidence-based policies, and effective implementation. By partnering with stakeholders, including the NHS and private, voluntary, and independent providers, HSU supports recruitment, retention, and workforce development, aligning education and research with real-world needs to enhance healthcare delivery and improve patient outcomes.

HSU leads the collaborative National Centre for Chiropractic Research, hosts the National Council for Osteopathic Research, and has established research centres such as the Centre for PAIn Research and the Centre for Osteopathic Research & Leadership. The Dorset Brain Health Clinic is based at HSU and is a collaboration with Dorset HealthCare University NHS Foundation Trust.

HSU’s vision is “To be a leading specialist health sciences university providing excellent education, clinical care, and applied research.” HSU plays a pivotal role as an anchor institution in Dorset, fostering knowledge exchange, economic growth, and innovation while delivering tangible benefits to patients, students, and the wider healthcare workforce.
